1 The Maritime Safety Committee, at its seventy-ninth session (1 to 10 December 2004), following the recommendations made by the Sub-Committee on Flag State Implementation at its twelfth session, approved the unified interpretation of the term .first survey. referred to in SOLAS regulations II-2/1.2.2.2, V/19.1.2.2, V/19.2.4.2.2 and V/20.1.2, as set out in the annex, with a view to ensuring a uniform approach towards the use of the above term.

2 Member Governments are invited to use the annexed interpretation when applying relevant provisions of SOLAS, and to bring it to the attention of all parties concerned.

Annex Unified interpretation of the term "first survey" referred to in SOLAS regulations II-2/1.2.2.2, V/19.1.2.2, V/19.2.4.2.2 and V/20.1.2


The term .first survey. used in SOLAS regulations II-2/1.2.2.2, V/19.1.2.2, V/19.2.4.2.2 and V/20.1.2 means the first annual survey, the first periodical survey or the first renewal survey for safety equipment or any other survey if the Administration deems it to be reasonable and practicable, taking into account the extent of repairs and alterations being undertaken, whichever is due first after the date specified in these regulations, and, in addition, in the case of ships under construction, the initial survey.
