1       TheMaritimeSafetyCommittee,atitsseventy-secondsession(17to26May2000),approveddraft interpretationsofsection7.8.6andparagraph7.8.6.1ofthe1994HSCCode,assetoutintheannexto the present circular, witha view to their incorporation in the MSC circular on Interpretations of the HSC Code  prepared  by  the  FP  Sub-Committee. However,  noting  that  MSC71hadalreadyapproved MSC/Circ.911onInterpretationsofthefireprotection-relatedprovisionsoftheHSCCode,theCommittee decided  to  incorporate  the  approved  interpretations  to  section  7.8.6  and  paragraph  7.8.6.1  into  the pretations contained in MSC/Circ.911 by means of the present addendum.

 

 

2       MemberGovernmentsareinvitedtobringtheannexedinterpretationstotheattentionofallthose concerned, with the request to use them in conjunction with the interpretations contained in MSC/Circ.911 when applying the fire protection-related provisions of the 1994 HSC Code.

INTERPRETATIONS OF SECTION 7.8.6 AND PARAGRAPH 7.8.6.1 OF THE 1994 HSC CODE

 

 

 

Section7.8.6

 

Sizingofpumpinganddrainagearrangements

 

(1)       Pumpinganddrainagearrangementsshouldbesuchastopreventtheaccumulationofwater onanyofsuchdecks.

 

(2)       Inrespectofscuppersanddrainagepumps,thefollowingshouldbecompliedwith:

 

.1         whencalculatingtheamountofwaterthecapacityofboththewatersprayingsystem pumpsandrequirednumberoffirehosenozzlesshouldbetakenintoaccount;

 

.2         thedrainagesystemshouldhaveacapacityofnotlessthan125%ofthecapacity specifiedin.1;

 

.3         bilgewellsshouldbeofsufficientholdingcapacityandshouldbearrangedattheside shell of the ship at a distance from each other of not more than 40 m in each watertightcompartment.

 

Paragraph7.8.6.1

 

Sizingofscuppersanddrainagepumps

 

Forthesizingofscuppersanddrainagepumpsthecapacityofboththewatersprayingsystempumps and the water discharge from the required number of fire hose nozzles specified in 7.7.8.4 as applicable,shouldbetakenintoaccount.
