1 The Maritime Safety Committee, at its sixty-fourth session (5 to 9 December 1994),
noted that there have been cases of improper use of lanyards attached to satellite EPIRBs
by securing them to the ship. The buoyant lanyard is only to be used by survivors for
securing the EPIRB to a liferaft, lifeboat or person in the water.
2 The Committee recommended that appropriate attention should be given by the
responsible authorities to prevent improper use of lanyards attached to satellite EPIRBs.
3 Member Governments are invited to bring the above recommendation to the attention of
seafarers, shipowners and all others involved with installing and maintenance of satellite
EPIRBs.
