522(13) Recommendation on carriage of emergency position-indicating radio beacons

THE ASSEMBLY,

RECALLING Article 16(j) of the Convention on the International Maritime Organization concerning the functions of the Assembly in relation to regulations concerning maritime safety,

RECOGNIZING that emergency position-indicating radio beacons improve the safety of life at sea and greatly facilitate search and rescue,

RECALLING that resolution A.217(VII) recommends that Administrations require ships to be equipped with emergency position-indicating radio beacons,

NOTING the favourable experience at ready gained with emergency position-indicating radio beacons operating in conjunction with existing satellite systems such as COSPAS/SARSAT and INMARSAT,

NOTING FURTHER that the Maritime Safety Committee will consider the carriage of float-free satellite emergency position-indicating radio beacons on ships as part of the future global maritime distress and safety system,

HAVING CONSIDERED the recommendation made by the Maritime Safety Committee at its forty-eighth session,

RECOMMENDS Administrations, when implementing resolution A.217(VII) and until a satellite emergency position-indicating radio beacon system has been internationally agreed, to encourage the carriage of float-free emergency position-indicating radio beacons operating on frequencies compatible with existing satellite search and rescue systems
