528(13) Recommendation on weather routeing

THE ASSEMBLY,

RECALLING Article 16(j) of the Convention on the International Maritime Organization concerning the functions of the Assembly in relation to regulations concerning maritime safety,

BEING AWARE of the damages to and total losses of ships directly or indirectly caused by meteorological and oceanographic factors,

RECOGNIZING that weather routeing advice is available to shipping in the form of recommended "optimum routes" for individual crossings of the oceans,

BEING OF THE OPINION that the practice of weather routeing has proved of benefit to ship operations and safely as well as to their crews and cargoes,

RECOGNIZING that the final decision regarding the ship's navigation rests always with the master,

HAVING CONSIDERED the recommendation made by the Maritime Safety Committee at its forty-eighth session,

RECOMMENDS Governments to advise ships entitled to fly the flag of their States of the availability of weather routeing, particularly that published in volume D of WMO publication No. 9 which contains a list of official and officially authorized meteorological services providing such routeing advice.*


* Note: A limited number of governmental entities which provide this type of service are contained in WMO publication No.9. Existing non-governmental services can be included. povided WMO is supplied with the necessary information.
