690(17) Periodical Inspections of abandon ship and fire drills on passenger ships

THE ASSEMBLY,

RECALLING Article 15(j) of the Convention on the International Maritime Organization concerning the functions of the Assembly in relation to regulations and guidelines concerning maritime safety,

NOTING regulation III/18.3 of the International Convention for the Safely of Life at Sea, 1974, as amended concerning, inter alia, the carrying out of musters and drills on passenger ships,

NOTING FURTHER the need for Administrations to ensure that musters and drills are being carried out on passenger ships in an effective manner,

HAVING CONSIDERED the recommendation made by the Maritime Safety committee at its fifty-ninth session,

1. RECOMMENDS Governments to make periodical inspections of abandon ship and fire drills of the crew on passenger ships to ensure that such drills are being satisfactorily carried out;

2. RECOMMENDS ALSO that such periodical inspections are carried out on each passenger ship at intervals not exceeding 12 months;

3. REVOKES resolution A.125(V).
