1          TheMaritimeSafetyCommittee,atitsseventy-fifthsession(15to24May2002)requested theSub-CommitteeonSafetyofNavigationtoconsidercarefullytheprocedureforintroducingand maintaining AIS binary messages.

                                         

2           TheSub-CommitteeonSafetyofNavigation,atitsforty-eighthsession(8to12 July 2002) notingthattheresponsibilityforthemaintenanceofthebinarymessageswascurrentlywithIALA andneededtobeofficiallytransferredtoIMO,andagreeingontheneedtocarefullyconsiderand developadministrativeandotherprocedureswhichshouldapply,invitedMembersandIALAinthe interimtomakeaninventoryofallbinarymessagesandadviseNAV 49.   IALAconfirmedits readiness to hand over the responsibility for the maintenance of AIS binary messages to IMO.

 

3          The  Maritime  Safety  Committee  at  its  seventy-sixth  session  (2  to  13  December  2002) subsequently endorsed the actions of NAV 48 and approved this circular.

 

4          Member Governments are invited to take note of the above information.
