A study of the variation in properties of crushed rock aggregate

The research was meant as a pilot study on the statistical variation in a quarry. The variation of properties in the quarry face are compared with the variation in properties of the aggregate product. It is proven that there is a considerable variation in the properties of aggregates over different time-spans. The petrographical composition of the aggregate changes and as a consequence also the results of the physical and strength index tests (micro-Deval abrasion value, water absorption, flakiness index). Two types of quarry face investigations were performed using the equotip hardness tester. This new index test seems to be an useful and easy applicable tool. A selected part of the quarry face was investigated using different sampling lay-outs. These were analyzed using different interpolation techniques. The 'source'(quarry face) of the studied aggregate was also investigated. There is a good correlation between the source and the aggregate product, expecially in the petrographical composition.
