The research programme 'RIACON' was started to evaluate the risk of shoreface nourishment and subaquous sand extraction for the benthic community in marine coastal waters. In the Netherlands the RIACON project focusses on a nourishment site off the coast of the island of Terschelling. This report gives the results of a macrofauna survey made in April 1995. The benthic community is described in terms of species diversity, numerical density of species and biomass of major taxa. Both the nourishment and an adjacent reference area were investigated. Statistical comparisons with pre-nourishment data are made.In the nourished area a recovery in number of species, total density and biomass was found towards values of the pre-extraction survey. Community structure is described using TWINSPAN cluster analysis.
