1 Disposal of expired prescription medicines

MARPOL related requirement MEPC.1/Circ.834/Rev. 1 (under section 'Minimization and management of ship-generated wastes/residues', paragraph no. 27) considers that a supplier and/or manufacturer must be able to provide the specialized facilities for the treatment or disposal of expired prescription medicines.

1.1 Approved Disposal Pathway

The following approval disposal pathway (in order of preference) should be used:

  1. Return to supplier as stipulated in MEPC.1/Circ.834/Rev.1;

  2. Deliver to local pharmacy via a local agent;

  3. Deliver to a Port Reception Facility classified as Category C waste;

  4. On board incineration; this only if the ship's incinerator is certified for Category C waste. Incineration is permitted provided the incinerator meets the temperature and emission standards required for Category C waste. Reference is made to MARPOL Annex VI, regulation 16.

1.2 Operational Guidance

The ships Garbage Management Plan shall be updated, if needed, to incorporate the above procedures, especially in case the ships incinerator might be used.

When using options 1–3, always obtain and retain a disposal receipt on board the ship.

When using option 4, the ship (owner) shall verify incinerator suitability beforehand and record the operation. The incineration event must be entered in the Garbage Record Book. It is advised to update any medicine records as deemed necessary.
