1 TheMaritimeSafetyCommittee,atitsseventy-sixthsession(2to13December2002), and the Marine Environment Protection Committee, at its forty-ninth session (14 to 18 July 2003), recognizing the need for a standard set of occupational health data for seafarersthatcoversthesubstancestowhichtheyarelikelytobecomeexposedonboardtankers, agreedthatastandardformatshouldbeusedtoprovideseafarerswithclear,conciseandaccurate occupational health information.
2 Therefore, the Committees, noting that the United Nations Sub-Committee for the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals has developed a single,globallyharmonizedsystemtoaddressclassificationofchemicals,labels,andsafetydata sheets, whichare intendedto provideessentialhealth and safetyinformationonchemicalsforuse byconsumers,workers,transportworkersandemergencyresponders,agreedthat,inadditionto theprovisionsofparagraph16.2oftheInternationalCodefortheConstructionandEquipmentof Ships Carrying Dangerous Chemicals in Bulk (IBC Code), any cargo offered for shipment in bulkwhichissubjecttochapters17and18oftheIBCCodeshouldbeaccompaniedbysafety datasheetsbasedontheformatcontainedinchapter1.5oftheGloballyHarmonizedSystemfor Hazard Classification and Communication.*
3 MemberGovernmentsareinvitedtobringtheaboverecommendationtotheattentionof shipowners, shipoperators and other parties involved in the transportation of such cargo.
