SubjectCorrection of freeboard for extensions of superconstructures and raised quaterdecks around hatchways

Dear Sir,

Herewith I have to inform you that for the Netherlands Shipping Inspectorate it is acceptable that the correction of the freeboard value for extensions of superstructures and raised quarter decks around hatch coamings (see enclosed sketch) are calculated without a correction for the hold spaces as being a recess, provided that a safe passage from aft to fore is possible

For complying with the requirement for a safe passage, a permanent gangway at the same level as the raised quarter deck has to be constructed, or if a raised quarter deck not fitted a permanent gangway has to be constructed at a height above the freeboard deck of at least 1.5 times the freeboard reduction resulting from the correction for the superstructure extensions. Adequate head clearance has to be observed.

Further it is acceptable that an extension, as indicated at the enclosed sketch, will be calculated at the end of the superstructure or raised quarter deck in accordance with the interpretation of Regulation 34(2) of the International Convention on Load Lines 1966, as given in LL15.

Yours sincerly,

Ing. T. Smit
